Day Three...And Some Pictures

Next stop still ended up in York, NE at Eric’s sister’s home BUT there was a slight glitch in the plan. About six miles past North Platte, NE our van’s transmission slipped into neutral never to come out again. Boo was driving at the time and did a beautiful job of getting the van and trailer off the road and out of harm’s way. As Farmers Insurance sent out a tow truck I phoned L back in the Central Valley. Her husband immediately called the lady they know in the area for a local transmission shop. I had sent a Daisy Fields Basket to her at one time which is why I figured they might be able to help. We were directed to a great place that I feel very comfortable with. This gal was also getting people together to provide us with dinner and the church she attended was willing to put us up for the night.

We decided to travel to York instead (about three hours east) to stay with Eric’s sister and family until Thursday when they said that the transmission would be fixed. I will either rent a car and travel back to North Platte to pick up the van or I will hitch a ride with someone. It means that we will not get to Peoria until Thursday evening. Ugh!

Soooooo…the damage looks like it will be about $2,500.00. Obviously the transmission was going and needed help. I am not sure why the shop that we took it to in Turlock said that everything was okay but I have a certain amount of peace about this. The adventure continues!

This morning we read two passages from Ephesians. Talk about providential!
Ephesians 4:1-3, 25-29
I, therefore, the prisoner of Lord, entreat you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing forbearance to one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you, with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Be angry and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity. Let him who steals, steal no longer but rather let him labor performing with his own hands what is good, in order that he may have something to share with him who has need. Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God by whom you were by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and slander be put away from you along with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another just as God in Christ has forgiven you.

We talked about how we are all called to be His covenant children and so we need to act as such. I asked if we were continually promoting peace in our home by our words and actions. I know that I have not been the ideal model of peace. Words can be so destructive and yet can help build and edify. Being kind, tender-hearted, and forgiving each other shows Christ’s love to each other. If we do not forgive and suffer long we are acting as the man in the parable who after being given pardon for his debts goes out and requires a debt owed him that was quite a bit less. I am just amazed that the Lord would ask us this day to prove our faith in His Word.
I talked to the kids about smelling like a rose or a skunk. Today we were stepped on and we all smelled like roses. We showed Christ to each other. We proved that in difficult situations we could pull it together and love each other after all.
Although these situations make me miss Eric all the more and it makes me long for another husband to take care of us, I am realizing that His strength is sufficient for all of my needs including help in making decisions that Eric would have made.

Way to go Costco!
O-kay, so it needs a bit of dressing up but here is the semi-finished result of our trailer make-over. This bench seat used to be shaped as a half circle and took up much of the walking path through the trailer and could not be used as a bed. Now the kids can sleep on it and sit on it to read books. When we get back home we will finish the project by covering the bottom mechanics area and making an official seat cover...although I am finding that the sheet works just as well.

Beautiful Utah

The Great Salt Lake and all eighteen of us

The Great Salt Lake and our family

Beautiful Wyoming

As Mr. Hector and I were waiting for the tow truck the rest of the crew drove down to Fort McPherson National Cemetery. That is just like us homeschoolers to make a field trip out of a car disaster

The van being let off at the transmission shop

We crammed all eighteen of us in the Hector motorhome for the three hour drive to York

Here is Ben H. frantically trying to get some new info up on his blog before I do.

Lots and lots of smiling faces. Even amid the mess of transmissions and lay-overs you are all loving and enjoying each other. Sorry you're having to go this alone but it is making you so much stronger and all of you that much lovelier. I hope the rest of your trip is problem free. My dad used to always say cars had "too many movable parts," meaning that parts break and the law of averages was bound to catch up with you maybe in the very next move. Whatever (another of his favorite expressions!) hope you don't have any more problems. Let's see, tire, transmission... that about does it! I've learned that if anyone can love their way through harrowing times, it's the Davis family. Just so glad that Boo was able to get the van and trailer off to the side of the road safely. You are a competent family! And God is watching you closely, seeing to it that you are taken care of when the need arises. Take care...

Thank you for sharing. I've been a "skunk" lately, but the Lord has been gracious to teach me. Last night we studied Ps. 7 which addressed my attitude and this morning I was encouraged by your post. I love how you teach your children. My favorite reminder is that "we are called to be God's covenant children amd we need to act like it."

I look forward to learning more about your journey both spiritual and physical.

Oh Heather! I'm so glad your travelling with friends and not having to face all this "adventure" by yourself!

I needed to hear that verse. I've had some skunky smells lately.

Continuing to pray that God will keep you all safe as you travel.

My eyes are tearing up thinking of your two oldest driving that big van and hauling that big camper...how Eric and God prepared you all for what was coming. You guys are my heroes. I pray that if my family ever needs to, we would come through the fire like you all are. Much love, Denise for the Horrocks' in SC

Hi,
I read your blog often. I'm amazed at your strength through something so tragic! I recently lost my mother in law (on my birthday) in Jan. Its nothing like losing a spouse for sure but its been the most difficult thing I have ever been through, I loved her so much and she was a daily part of my life with phone calls and visits. Her death was pretty sudden, cancer in Oct, gone by Jan 2nd. I can so relate to some of your entries about grief. Again not trying to compare a mom in law to a husband, however I had never known grief like this or lost a real close loved one. At first it hurt just to take a breath in literally, the pain was so great knowing she was gone even though I knew she was a believer and was with her Savior. Things are better now but still not easy, I rely a lot of God! All this said there is a homeschool blogger that just lost a husband in a semi accident, you may have already heard. She is so so hurting and just reading her entries are painful, if you feel led I thought maybe you could pray for her or maybe even encourage. I just know how therapeutic reading your blog has been for me. She is at http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/dixiecajuns/

I love following your road trip and hearing your glorifying words of our Lord, despite challenges. My husband works in York so I am sad that I missed getting to see you by not reading up on that earlier. I hope you are enjoying your time at the Creation Museum! I can't wait to go. Praying for your beautiful family, Tanya
